ObjectivesThe main objective of the Scholars of the Future program is to provide opportunities for undergraduate students, particularly women and ethnic minorities, to gain in-depth academic and research experiences, heighten attitudes toward IT research, and receive encouragement to pursue graduate studies in computer science. Once the students have been selected, they will enroll in undergraduate research credits under the direction and guidance of a faculty research advisor. Each student will be given course credit towards his or her bachelor's degree for taking the research credits. Students will also be given the opportunity to work on one of the many available research projects. The students will participate in monthly research seminars. The goals of the research seminars are to expose both the graduate and undergraduate scholars to other underrepresented students in IT, introduce them to additional research topics, expose them to the process of applying to graduate school, and to provide a platform for the scholars to present their work. Some of the research seminars will be used to discuss the process of applying to graduate school and navigating the academy in graduate school. Additionally, there will be seminars that will focus on information technology ethics. |
